Dark Souls Like World Design

Versionning

Level Design

Genre : World Design Study

World Level Design, Souls Like.

The goal was to work in team on a world design and merge them to have a full scale world (no combat)

I worked on 3 of the levels and managed the Versionning for the team.

Goal :

  • Creating a World Level Design close to an open world feeling (we adjusted that to do a Dark Souls like level design)

  • Student Project.

Constraints :

  • Unreal Engine 4

  • Level Streaming

  • Every level must be attached to other(s).

  • Global consistance of the World LD

Learning occured :

  • Versionning, I was in charge of the whole Git versionning. That meant being there for my teamates for every conflict there was.

  • Teaching basic Git behaviour to my teamates.

  • Using Unreal for its Level Design features (not much of BSP used)

Mistakes were made :

  • Not asking all of my teamates to organize their files in Unreal costed me a few hours of cleaning for the final milestone.

  • Giving my teamates the confort of knowing I will be there for versionning meant that some relied completly on me as soon as they saw a conflict. Those were not interested in learning Git at all.

  • Some Designers worked alone and gave us no news for weeks. Not responding or updating the project. Discord message and mails weren't enough. Not being in a work environment meant we had little means of contacting them.

Challenge :

  • I had the most area to develop (3), with two of medium size.

  • Fairly new to Unreal, specifically in team work.

  • Being in charge of our Git, and being the only one understanding a little Git and its versionning was pressuring and a lot of added work.

Why did it work well :

  • Verry good comunications skills when it mattered the most (merging, versionning issues, milestones).

  • Most of us were found of Dark Souls Level Design style.
