Genre : 3C Study

Designing a 3C from scratch.

Player controls a Slime Ball, able to Jump, Stick to surfaces and Bounce!

 

I designed the mechanics along with my team, and many test zones to show situations in wich the Slime Ball can have challenges.

Level Design

Goal :

  • Creating a 3C : Camera, Character, Controls ; from scratch.

  • First school project colaboration with a Game Programer.

Constraints :

  • 4 Game Designers and 1 Game Programer

​

Learning occured :

  • For the purpose of only doing a 3C of pretty low scale, 4 GD for only 1 Game Programer are too many cooks.

  • Communication with programers must be straight forward and well thought. Us Designers tended to talk and Design along the way, wich was a waste of time for our Programer.

Mistakes were made :

  • Not reviewing the player's value (time that can be spent on either mechanic of Stick and Bounce) of the person doing the build led to wrong value in the game. Invalidating some Level Design situations I worked on.

  • Too ambitious on start, we shouldn't design Grapplin Hook on this scale.

  • Scheduling with a programer means the minimum time a feature can take is 1 day, not 15 minutes.

Challenge :

  • First COVID-19 school project started indoors and finished from home.

​

Why did it work well :

  • The Game Designer team, after meetings were set on the same idea and feature.

  • We cut features along the project without being too attached on the ideas of these features.

  • I tried many LD situations that worked on Game Object mechanics, like an accelerator becoming a bumper, or a full scale ring canon! I had fun designing around the mechanics.
